Give us some background on Under New Order…
Under New Order is a Cincinnati-based original funk, retro soul, jazz, and hip hop band. We were started 3 years ago by husband and wife musician duo April "Lox Lane" Kindell (vocals, writing), and Marty "Styx" Kindell (drummer). After a few years of performing with a group of rotating musicians, in 2012 we added a consistent core of, Greencloud (Bass), Baba Charles (Percussion), and Suave (vocals, writing). Together the members represent the cities of Cincinnati, Covington, Baltimore, New York, and New Orleans, so the blend of the different styles and cultures is definitely evident in the Under New Order sound.
The goal of gathering this group of experienced performers was to create something fresh, inspirational, yet original in a time where most gigs in the region required urban bands to play r&b and top 100 covers. In 2012 we released our self-tiled debut album "Under New Order" (available at www.UnderNewOrder.com). It received a very good response from various media sources and blogs.
We began traveling and performing at various private functions, poetry, and soul events around the region to promote that project last year and now we're in he final stages of completing our next project "Seasons" coming in November. We're all about the spirit of collaboration and empowering the independent musician community, so we occasionally invite other musicians and vocalists to sit in on sets with us. We definitely believe in, incorporate, and respect the power of music and unity!
What can one expect to witness at the show on Saturday at Fountain Square?
Well, it's gonna be and it's gots ta be, funky! (Haha) We're going to have a good time and bring our brand of live music to arguably one of the biggest platforms an independent band has here in Cincinnati. Our friends over at Self Diploma, put together a pretty awesome 14 week, summer series, and we were blessed to be selected to participate in week 10 alongside Cincinnati hip hop producer extraordinaire, Hi-Tek. To say that we were excited about being given that opportunity would be a huge understatement. It begins at 7, and we hit around 9pm for a 30 min set. All free and family friendly!
Tell us about the new album!
The new album "Seasons" is going to encompass all the elements of music we've built our sound on plus some new blends. Heavily influenced by soul and funk music of the late 1970s, we're looking to successfully merge positive lyrics and catchy yet groovy melody lines. The album is being produced by Under New Order member Nate "Suave" Cameron and producer/engineer Jonothan "Prospek" Bailey at New Fidelity Studios in Camp Washington. The duo who are both native New Orleanians, have been musically collaborating for over 8 years. Needless to say we're excited about what they are creatively bringing to the project. We're also pumped to have a few very special guest musicians from local standout bands The Cliftones(reggae), Jazz Renaissance(traditional jazz), and State Song (rock/electronic) feature on some tracks. "Seasons" is due out in November and it's being released as well as distributed through New York based indie label, GPNYC Records(www.gpnyc.com)
What have been some highlights from the tour this summer?
We've been fortunate enough to perform at many community events, festivals, and private parties this past year. Their were two very fulfilling moments that stand out though. One, was about two weeks ago when we were called to do a last minute fill-in set at Washington Park on a beautiful Sunday evening. The crowd and the weather were both very cooperative and they enjoyed our 2 hour set. Another, was just last month when we put together and hosted a new concert series called "The Cincy Soul Series" at the Chameleon Bar in Northside. In an effort to shine the light on local original soul-based music, we featured two very talented acts besides ourselves, Jennifer Simone and a band called, Electic Vibe.
Our inaugural event boasted a crowd of nearly 125 fans of quality original music. As a band we felt as though the outlets available in our city that catered to our sound were few, so we decided to take matters in our own hands and create a platform for ourselves and our talented counterparts throughout the region. Of course this upcoming Saturday in front of a few thousand folks in Fountain Square and sharing a stage with Hi-Tek will also be a highlight!
What is next for Under New Order?
Besides finalizing the recording portion of our new album, we are continuing to travel and perform heavily as well as growing our "Cincy Soul Series" event. We've got a pretty full performance schedule for the rest of the year but some pretty cool things we have coming up in town are Ohmstead Festival in Oxford, OH Aug 22-24, Western & Southern Tennis Tournament in Mason, OH Aug. 17, and Bend in The River Fest at The Sanctuary in Lower Price Hill Oct. 3 & 4. We love that the versatility in our sound often affords us the opportunity to be considered for so many different kinds of gigs. We are looking to promote and empower the original soul music community in a region historically known for just that.
We want all music listeners that encounter us to be, Under a New Order!
Do not miss this night of FREE music on Fountain Square! It all kicks off at 7p.
