Dutch artist Dotan is supporting Ben Folds this fall, including the show Tonight at Taft Theatre! The show follows a massive year of touring for Dotan, major international summer festival slots including Pinkpop, Sziget, Haldern Pop, Rock Werchter, and his U.S. debut at SXSW.
Dotan continues to celebrate the global success of his latest album 7 Layers, out now via Republic Records. Since it’s release in Europe last year, 7 Layers has been certified Triple Platinum in Holland and Gold in Belgium, and the album’s hit single “Home” won the prestigious 3voor12 “Song of the Year” Award in Holland. The song is also charting in Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Norway, and was the #2 download on SiriusXM’s Unofficial Alt-18 chart in the U.S.
In search of inspiration for his album, Dotan, who reached #2 on Billboard’s “Next Big Sound” chart late last year, retreated to the living room—not just his own living room, but also the dens of complete strangers. He posted a message on Facebook asking people to invite him over to their homes, and he ended up playing in over 100 personal spaces. Building on the intimate experience of these small gigs, he decided to record his album in the trusted surroundings of his own living room.
“We installed microphones, put down mattresses to reduce the noise, and started recording,” Dotan explains. “I didn’t want to make a perfect, clinical record but an authentic and honest collection of very personal songs. Writing and recording this album was all about peeling my own 7 layers of skin off.”
