Passion Pit began as a one-man project of Michael Angelakos in order to produce a Valentine’s Day gift for his girlfriend. That gift ended up being the EP Chunk of Change. The EP ended up in the hands of friends and so it began. Passion Pit is still primarily Michael Angelakos but joined by a full band for live gigs. While the band debuted their first album, Manners in 2009, Passion Pit hit mainstream stardom with Gossamer in 2012.
The latest album, Kindred focuses on family, gratitude, and love. The shift hit after Angelakos opened up about his bipolar disorder and was met by cynics that thought his mental illness was all for show.
The name of the band comes from the Variety Slanguage Dictionary, a glossary of Variety's frequently-used slang, which was provided by the Hollywood insider publication to help not-so-savvy readers decipher its content. The magazine used the term to refer to drive-in theatres, because of their privacy and romantic allure for teenagers.
