Royal Holland got tired of people not knowing or seemingly not caring about music from amazing musicians who don't have the marketing power to make you want to get their music. Often times, the music being posted is free, it only costs a small amount of your time, and could change the way you look at creativity. Support the ones close to you and they will sprout wings. Royal Recommends is a way to showcase these bands.
I'm listening to In Details right now.
It just so happens that I did not really know about In Details until a few days ago. We had a band drop off of a bill they set up at The Southgate House Revival and so I posted a quick note in the Cincinnati D.I.Y. forum asking if any bands could hop on.
Paul Trygstad got back to me right away and was enthusiastic enough that I decided to check out their tunes. This stuff is orchestral, yet sparse. It's dramatic, and affecting. It's pretty and also dark and shadowy. These are some of my favorite things to combine.
The good thing is that you'll be able to not only support them and their music by listening to and buying some of their tunes directly from them on Bandcamp (They get the most revenue that way).
Dig into the tunes a little bit and you'll either not like, or fall in love with Paul's unique voice and delivery. I personally dig it, but could see how it might be polarizing. Just imagine the first time you heard a Leonard Cohen tune and thought, man, that guy's voice is a little weird, but then you listened to the productions as a whole and got hooked. Then you couldn't remember how you ever felt that way in the first place? I think it's kind of like that.
I hear hints of Cloud Cult. I like that they post their lyrics on their band camp page. Lyrics are important when they have something to say, and In Details certainly has some important things to say. The lyrics are dark and brooding but also hopeful, and these kinds of sentiments certainly fit the current state of affairs in the world.
