Following the April release of their latest album, Nashville-based blues/rock band Blackfoot Gypsies is heading to Southgate House Revival in Newport, KY, on Friday May 5th (note: this being Cinco de Mayo does not insinuate that there will be any Mexican influence on this show, although that would be entertaining).
Initially a two-piece band with Matthew Paige (vocals/guitar) and Zack Murphy (drums), the band expanded to four members with the induction of Dylan Whitlow (bass/vocals) and Ollie Dog (harmonica) and continued to infuse their rock-n-roll vibe with roots of country and blues.
As a two-man band under Plowboy Records, Matt and Zack built up their fan base with two self-released EPs (Blackfoot Gypsies in 2010 and Dandee Cheeseball in 2011) as well as an LP (On the Loose) in 2012. The 2015 release of the band’s second full-length LP, Handle It, was the first album released as a four-man group. The band has shared stages over the years with groups like Alabama Shakes, Drivin’ N’ Cryin’, The Carolina Chocolate Drops, Trampled by Turtles, and more. They have previously toured through the US and recently took on their first international tour in Europe.
Their latest album, To the Top, includes 15 original songs and was self-produced by the band. Backup vocals and instrumentals on the record were provided by hot artists like Margo Price, Alexis Saski, and many more. This album, according to Blackfoot Gypsies, clarifies that rock and roll is alive and well on the music scene. Hits like “I’m So Blue” and “Promise to Keep” kick off a high-gear southern rock energy while slower songs like “Potatoes and Whiskey” leans towards a honky-tonk vibe. This blend of blues, rock and roll, country, and southern rock shows not only the complex nature of their music but also the inspiration behind each and every lyric.
With power-packed shows, the explosive energy that Blackfoot Gypsies provides only further highlights their passion for the music and what they do. Tickets are still available for the May 5th show at Southgate House Revival here. Doors at SGHR open at 8 p.m. with the show set to begin around 9 p.m.
