Carriers are set to break out in 2019. Get on board as they are about to blow up. They will soon be releasing a LP, Now Is The Time For Loving Me, Yourself & Everyone Else featuring drumming/percussion on every track from The National's Bryan Devendorf and was produced by John Curley of The Afghan Whigs.
We were stoked to have sat down with Carriers prior to the show tonight at Fountain Square with The Cordial Sins and Erika Wennerstrom.
Tell us about the recording process of your new LP…
Carriers had only played a few shows when we started recording. John Curley & I would get together & work on bass parts at Ultrasuede Studios. Bryan Devendorf and I would meet at his house and work out the drums. Once I felt good with both of their parts, the three of us began meeting at the studio and working out the parts for drums, bass & me on guitar & vocals. Cory Pavlinac, Trent Becknell & Aaron Collins later came in and we tracked as a full band on most of the tracks
We worked on it for about 2 years once every week or two, depending on Bryan & Johns tour schedule. It was a really fun experience and was great becoming friends with them through the process. We finished up the record doing overdubs with Isaac Karns who I was in Pomegranates with at his studio Marble Garden in OTR. It was great to work with him again and I’m thankful for all that he added. Chad Wahlbrink mixed & mastered it. He’s a long-time friend and collaborator with Enlou, Pomegranates, Sacred Spirits, Caleb Groh, The Soil & The Sun and more. So, working with him on my first album of my songs felt very appropriate and I’m stoked with how this record turned out. Final step was finding a label to release it and having Michael & Good Eye Records hop on board has been a dream. This record will be on vinyl as a double LP thanks to him!
What do you love most about the Cincinnati Music Scene?
The scene in town is and has always been pretty special & unique to me. From high school shows to moving here listening to The Sheds & Matthew Shelton, to playing all over town & touring and being here the past 11 years, Cincy has been home to me and music has been a huge part of that for me. Our city has its own vibe for sure. People are very supportive of one another. People make it out to shows & buy each other’s records. That’s a cool thing. We have a strong community even though we’re all doing our own thing.
I can’t think of this music scene & not think of Dan McCabe at Woodward/MOTR. He has always been a huge support of my music & I’m thankful for what he’s done for Carriers and the rest of the bands in this city. From Midpoint to opening MOTR, having free shows, still paying the bands well & renovating The Woodward Theater, he’s a great dude & Cincinnati is lucky to have him.
I’m truly thankful to all the folks that work to make this city stand out by supporting the arts and creating a space for artists to grow & be celebrated. We’ve got a cool thing here, I’m glad to be a part of it.
What is next for Carriers?
We have a show tonight at Fountain Square with Erika Wennerstrom Of Heartless Bastards. Really enjoy her song “Extraordinary Love.” Stoked she asked us to play! We’re going on tour with our friend Molly Parden from Nashville in July. She sang on our record and makes beautiful music of her own/sings & tours with some amazing artists. Also, we are releasing another single from the record mid-July. We are putting our record out August 23rd with a release show at Woodward Theater. Our friends Turtledoves, Joesph & Molly Parden will be playing that as well. Bryan & John are gonna hop on stage if it works out as well! That will be a very special night. First time having a record for sale as Carriers! Everyone is invited to come celebrate with us!
We’re planning on recording album two this year as well. This one hopefully won’t take 4 years to release! After that, gonna be hitting the road and planning a national tour in November as well as dates throughout the rest of Summer & Fall.
