After touring with Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, and Lady Antebellum and taking the Opry stage this summer, Levi Hummon is hitting the road as a headliner to showcase his viral hits, including his latest single, "State I'm In." Levi can be heard spinning on Spotify’s New Music Friday official playlist, New Boots, Wild Country, Next from Nashville, and more. He was recently named the face of Amazon Music's official Introducing: Country playlist along with the cover of Spotify’s Hot Country playlist. His music video for his last single, "Drop of Us" just premiered on People Country, and his new single already has over 50,000 streams on Spotify since its recent release.

Levi is the son of Marcus Hummon, a highly esteemed songwriter who penned iconic country hits like Dixie Chicks, "Cowboy, Take Me Away," "God Bless the Broken Road" by Rascal Flatts, and "Born to Fly" by Sara Evans. 

We caught up with Levi Hummon for an interview before his Brick Street show in Oxford last Wednesday night. Check it out!

How do you feel about your first ever headlining tour?

Honestly, just so excited. We’ve been out with so many amazing artists and learning so much. I feel like this is the perfect time in my career to really go out and put on a show for my fans.

With your previous tour experience with Tim McGraw and Keith Urban, the stage is definitely familiar to you at this point, but how do you think this tour will be different for you as an artist?

It’s so fun going out and opening for these mega stars. At the same time, they have their own loyal fans, so it’s going to be packed no matter what. The difference is that this tour is about going back to these cities and reaching out to the fans that felt a connection at each show and continuing to reach new fans.

You were recently named the face of Amazon Music's official Introducing: Country playlist along with the cover of Spotify’s Hot Country playlist. How does that feel?

Unreal. The streaming platforms have been so good to me and such a great place where fans from all over the world can find my music. I mean people all over the country are singing back to us at every show, and it’s without a doubt because of their support.

What influences do you apply into the songwriting process?

Listening to both new music and old records inspire me, but my dad is a huge influence of mine. He’s a Grammy award winning songwriter, so I grew up around music and around the songwriting community. I think the most important thing for me in songwriting is living in Nashville and being able to co-write with amazing writers every day.

How does your background in music and ties to songwriting (I.e. your father) factor into your growth as an artist? 

For me, it’s a mixture of how to embrace your dad being a successful songwriter and also how to carve away your own identity. I think that’s why touring is so important to me, because when I leave the Nashville bubble, I’m in a world where people aren’t familiar with my family, and I get to learn. 

If you were asked to pick one song off your EP Patient or one single that you released this year that stands out the most to you, which would it be and why? 

I think my new single “State I’m In” stands out. No matter what bar or arena we are in, people always seem to pay attention to that song in particular, and it resonates with them on a personal level. 

What gets your creative process going when it comes to writing a song like “State I’m In” or “Patient”? 

It’s always different. Whether it’s a beat, a title, a melody. I find inspiration all over the place and usually in my car haha.

You once played a song for Desmond Child and were turned off to writing temporarily. What sparked your fire to get back into it and make writing/music a career? 

Well I played a song for Desmond when I was 18, and he basically told me I needed to go write for a few more years. Fast forward four years later, he’s the guy who offered me my first publishing deal. He wasn't sure about my songwriting at first, and that’s what sparked me, because I knew deep down how much I loved songwriting, and I wanted to show him what I could do.
