DJ Coco knows how to get the party started and keep it going all night long. DJ Coco is a staple in the Cincinnati area, the life of the party, and the upmost professional. Recently I heard a rumor that she had a certain love for the band Journey. I jumped at the chance to catch up with my friend and yours, DJ Coco to get the scoop.
Tell us what we can expect from DJ Coco...
DJ Coco is my alter ego at this point. It’s when I can completely let go & curate a fun dance party! My co-workers joke that I twirl around on stage, and it’s true! I have fun with it! I’ve loved music my entire life. I’ve loved all things retro & vintage my entire life — so, being a DJ made so much sense when I kind of stumbled into it. My DJ setup is a Craigslist find, originally from the 70s, and is so unique! I love it. I enjoy the thrill of feeling out the audience, and playing what makes sense in that moment. Do we need a ballad, do we need some moshing, do we need a fun pop song? I’m ready! I like to take my audience on a musical journey, and I thank them for coming along for the ride! It’s a lot of fun!
Rumor has it that you have an epic story about Journey. Care to share?
I must admit that I’m a sucker for Journey. Yes, a band long before my time, but they’re literally a household name within my family. When my dad picked up my mom on their very first date, back in high school in the 80s, his 8-track got stuck, and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” played on repeat for the entirety of their date. Thus, this became their song. And has held a special place in my heart as well. I’m a hopeless romantic, so my parents love story makes me love Journey even more.
I love music, I work in the industry, and have gone to hundreds of shows. People often ask what my first concert was. Coincidentally, the first real concert that I remember going to at an actual venue as a kid was Journey with my parents & brothers. Soooo, if I had the opportunity to open for not only Toto, but also Journey, WOW! It would be so incredibly rad! It’s the little things, you know? That would be such an incredible moment.
Where can we come see DJ Coco in action next?
This month, I have a few gigs coming up. I host a monthly Emo Night at MixWells in Northside. I’ll be DJing a little dance party at the Baker’s Table Bakery in Newport on December 16th, and I’ll also be DJing at Homies For The Holidays on December 17th at Madison Live — my friends in Beloved Youth are playing a set, and then I’ll be spinning afterwards. I’ll be closing out the year at Queen City Radio on December 26th for their Sips n’ Spins series. Come on out to any & all of the things! In the great words of David Bowie, “Let’s Dance”!
