Being born into a legendary country music family name like Jennings is a story in and of itself. The notion could be interpreted as either a blessing or a curse, depending on who you are and how much country music history you know. It creates expectations and requires explanations. They are or will be, inevitably, large boots to fill for Whey Jennings, the young country music singer-songwriter and Nashville recording artist for Dirt Rock Empire.

Whey’s booming baritone vocals sound as big as Texas, much like his stage presence. Simply put, Whey is carrying the modern-day torch of the Outlaw country sound. The sound that his pioneer Grandparents, the legendary Waylon Jennings, and Jessi Colter established in the 70s. The sound his Uncle Shooter Jennings helped redefine and reintroduce to an evolving country music fanbase in the late 90s and early 2000s.
We had the chance to talk with Whey Jennings prior to the show!
Whey Jennings: I love to connect with fans. They can expect great music and a great experience together!
CM: When did you realize music was your calling?
WJ: Music has always been inside me. From my childhood watching my grandfather to the music that was always around me. I really believe music has always been my calling.
CM: Growing up in such an iconic family must have had a play, of course, but when did it really hit you?
WJ: It was always just the music and the emotion. I am not sure it really ever “hit” me. I do consider it a blessing to get to perform music and hopefully touch folks. It’s my roots.
CM: What can you tell us about the new album, Jekyll & Hyde?
WJ: This is my first full-length album and I couldn’t be more proud. I feel there is something for everyone on this project. There’s songs speaking to drug abuse and social issues. There’s songs of patriotism, and of course there’s songs that are just plain fun. I am so excited for people to check it out. So far the reception has been great for our first singles.
CM: What is next for Whey Jennings?
WJ: In today’s world there are a lot of people talking but I’m not sure who is really listening. As a songwriter and singer, I put my heart into making music that can speak for itself. My hope would be for my music to help, to unite, and to heal. I’m looking forward to the new album release, working with Mobilize Recovery to give back, and continuing to tour and write new songs.
