We caught up with Michael Moeller before the show to find out more about the show and what is next!
What can fans expect at the Live Recording this Friday at Radio Artifact?
I am really excited for Friday. This show is going to be a new level for myself and my band. We have worked through this set very meticulously and have new arrangements and musical elements locked in. Over the last couple of years, the band has naturally found the lane it belongs in. I have let that process be very organic, not trying to rush it. From trying new things to stripping things back, the process has required patience and grace. The newly named band "The Ohio River Authority" has really found the groove and we seem to have worked up something really special for Friday. Radio Artifact is a new venue for the band, me, and our fans. I have seen a couple of shows there and have been blown away by how great that room sounds. Devin Brooks and his team have put together an incredible space that we are eager to play and share with our fans. So after all that, we are really just focusing on making good music on Friday, and giving the folks that came a great show to remember. Not to mention we, get to share the show with The Grove and Jim Trace and the Makers.
Yeah, I am really pumped to have those guys with us. In March of this year, we played The Grove's Fundraiser Festival Rockin Revival at The Southgate House Revival. It was our first time being a part of the event, but we had a great time. We played an early afternoon set, which means I got to sit back and enjoy the rest of the night. The guys from The Grove watched our set and we talked about playing a show together. When the date came up and I confirmed the room at Radio Artifact, I reached out to Adam and it was a quick yes from him. He mentioned that Jim Trace and the Makers could be available too. I watched their set that night at the Rockin Revival and I loved the whole thing. So when I heard they were interested, I didn't hesitate to have them join the bill.
When recording a live album, what aspects do you look for? Personally, I prefer live albums to studio.
Well, this is my first live album recording, so I am being pretty open-minded. I know whenever I listen to a live album, I am always captivated by the nuance and the limitations. Studio records have the luxury of making mistakes, erasing them, and taking another shot. Live records have an almost dangerous feeling to them. The reality in a live vocal, the time/tempo that can get a little dynamic, and the space for a story or two. It is exponentially more alive than a studio record. Not better or worse, just different. So I guess that is what I look for when listening to a live record, so naturally, I will gravitate towards presenting that on Friday.
What is next for Michael Moeller?
I have been writing a ton this year, so I am itching to record. I have my band working on tracks right now of a collection of songs that will fill out an EP. It is in the production stages, but has had to pause because of the show preparation. We will be gearing up for more tracking after this show. I also have a really great collaborative recording project that I am going to be working on getting off the ground shortly after the show too. I am going to hold my hand real close at the moment, but I am excited for it as well. As for live shows, The Ohio River Authority and I will be playing at Fountain Square on September 6th for the Indie Friday series presented by the lovely CincyMusic. We get to share the night with JIMS and Lydia Shae. Both of who I adore, respect, and am happy to call friends. In early November, Jimmy Clepper and I are playing our 3rd Annual show at The Southgate House Revival. We probably need to come up with some sort of name for it, but that is always a great time. So be on the lookout for that announcement in the next month or so.
